If your dad’s anything like mine then coming up with birthday gift ideas is notoriously difficult. In fact I’m pretty sure that 2008, 2009 and 2010′s presents are still in their boxes somewhere. So in an attempt to avoid 2011′s birthday present ending up in the same place I’ve done some early research that may help some of you.

Here’s my pick of birthday gift ideas for dad 2012:-

1) The All Conquering Kindle

The Kindle has gone from strength to strength over the last couple of years, largely as a result of the massive publicity it receives on Amazon. When I first encountered a Kindle a couple of years ago my initial impression was that it seemed simple when compared to modern tablet PC’s, but then that’s the point. It’s been designed to do one thing extremely well and make the experience of reading digital books as simple and authentic (..and cheap) as possible. No other product on the market can match the screens text clarity even in bright light and a single charge can last up to a month depending on usage!

I was also worried that it would be too complicated for my dad but having used the new Kindle I’ve found that it really is super, super simple to use.

Perhaps, the most astonishing thing about the Kindle is the price of the new models. The brand new 6″ model that includes wi-fi can now be purchased for under £90 which really puts it in a league of its own.

2) The Essential Sat Nav System

Tom Tom Sat Nav

I actually purchased a Sat Nav for my Dad last year and I can report that it’s been well used over the last year. Admittedly, he was a little reluctant at first but once he’d used it to visit a couple of long lost friends he was completely convinced of its value. There are lots of Sat Nav brands out there but we still feel the TomTom systems are the easiest to use and can currently be purchased for less than £90

3) Football Club Newspaper Books

Football newspaper book

Even if your dad’s not interested in much else, there’s a good chance he’s still passionate about a football club. That’s where these football newspaper books come in. They are available here for most major clubs and feature actual newspaper cuttings detailing each significant event in a clubs history.

4) Sports Autobiographies

Scholes Autobiography

Following in the sports theme of number three we’ve got a new batch of sports related autobiographies that are out for 2012. There’s plenty to choose from here so there’s a good chance you’ll find something for your dad this year.

5) The Faithful Wallet

Dads-Wallet

Ok, so this ones a bit of a cliché but it’s also one of those presents that’s a safe bet. My dad goes through wallets for fun, in fact I’m sure he puts them through the wash so a new wallet finds it’s way into his presents each year! There’s plenty of wallets to choose from here.

6) Ugg Luxury Men’s Slippers

Ugg’s better known for the ultra comfortable winter boots they make for women but these luxury men’s slippers look fantastic. Ok, so you may have to explain to your dad who Ugg actually are but I’m pretty sure that once he’s tried these on they’ll be getting a lot of use. They are available here in various sizes.

7) Luxury Fountain Pen

If your dad has lots of distant friends and prefers to write to them using good old paper and pen then why not treat him to a luxury fountain pen. It’s one of those presents that if carefully selected can look a lot more expensive than it actually is and makes a great birthday present. Amazon have a great selection and some very attractive pricing.

8) The Complete Fully Restored World At War Collection

world at war dvd collection

This one might seem a bit random but Dad’s seem to love anything to do with history and in particular historic wars. The World At War collection is perhaps the most critically acclaimed documentary of its kind and has now been re-released in greatly improved DVD quality. There’s a whopping 26 episodes which will keep your dad busy throughout January! It’s also great value and can be purchased here for under £30.
